Donkeys have a special place in my heart! Whether they are the cute little miniature tykes or the mammoth size, donkeys have always been great pack and work animals. They are hearty and they can withstand a lot of climate conditions. They have, over recent years, become more and more popular for driving and trail riding. Their good nature, devotion to their people, and rock solid minds make them excellent choices for the person who wants to mosey on down the road.
Is a Donkey Right For You?
Donkeys are not known for their speed, but they are reliable trail partners and great drivers. They have a nice single foot walk that makes them comfortable and they are not flighty. Donkeys do tend to take their time when being used and they think. But they rarely are as hot-blooded or flighty as a horse or even the occasional mule (when the horse half shows up!).
I train donkeys just like I train mules so you can read all the details on the mule training page. But there is one thing you should understand about a donkey. That is that they are now being bred much better so their physical condition is good and their minds are solid. No other pack, driving, or riding animal will love you like a donkey will. When a mule gets that characteristic from the donkey half, it is truly a gift.
So if you are thinking of a mini for the grandkids, a bigger mule to drive or ride, or a donkey for breeding – nothing changes in the selection! My favorite color is always a good disposition! A well-bred donkey with a good disposition is a wonderful addition to your barn. I will be happy to step you through the training. Just give me a holler!
