Product Description

Heavy duty Beta Britchen will help keep your saddle in place and you mule comfortable. No matter if you’re a seasoned rider or training mules to ride, the Beta Britchen is a welcome departure from maintaining leather for a solid, durable and effective beta material.

Beta material is stronger, more durable and has a feel and appearance similar to leather. Steve recommends and uses a Beta britchen and breast collar instead of leather for it’s good looks, durability and ease of cleaning!

Designed to help keep your saddle in place and you mule comfortable, this britchen has lots of room for adjustment to fit different sized mules; easily add more holes if needed. Clean with soap and water.

Note from Steve: Beta breaching and breast collars are by far the easiest to take care of I personally prefer all Beta products for my personal use in my years of packing experience they are the very toughest and easiest to maintain.

This britchen is soft and pliable. It is much more comfortable for my mule than leather AND it doesn’t need any care to keep it soft! It is so much better than leather there is no comparison. In addition, I appreciate that there are so many adjustments. My mule is small (14 hands and she is refined). I was surprised that the britchen fitted her. As always, Steve is great to do business with. I really appreciate his attention to quality of the products he sells.

  2. Nadine Chounet (verified owner)

Love the softness and ability of this britchen to conform to and fit my large standard donkey. He is 13hh. I have a set of heavy harness leather britchen that I really dislike working with – it is heavy and stiff. This beta is fantastic and with all fo the adjustment I can fit it to my guy easily.

  3. William Hodge (verified owner)

The beta britchen I purchased is well stitched and sturdy but pliable. The buckles are very good quality. My mule is 13.2 hands and this britchen offers many adjustments to fit your mule. You get Steve’s advice and experience as a bonus!

  6. Sheryl Jurgensmeyer (verified owner)

I like that the britchen is very adjustable, I have two mules and can use it on both with quick adjustments. It’s easy to clean and doesn’t get stiff like leather.

  7. terry Larson (verified owner)

Steve, purchased your beta britchen August 2019. I was in a bind due to one mule went lame a week prior to our 60+ mile pack in the Gallatin Mt. range (Yellowstone). Four mules four men camping out of oversize saddle bags. It’s critical for a good fit britchen. I had a spare 13.5 hand mule and you’re small mule britchen fit perfect out of the box. Plus it arrived within 4 days. No galls after 6 days of hard ride.

  8. Barbara Gorzycki (verified owner)

Absolutely five stars for this britchen and for the beta headstall I purchased for my donkey. Soft, strong, beautiful, and it’s a fit. For those of us who ride donkeys, we all know most tack isn’t made for a donkey’s anatomy, and fit is always a problem, but with this beta britchen and headstall, it was so easy to adjust. I would recommend both, and Steve is just awesome about helping. It’s been a pleasure doing business with him.

  9. Dori Domerese (verified owner)

Well made, easy to adjust, supple beta to work with. Shipping was quick and Queen valley mule ranch is always a pleasure to buy from.

  10. Peggy Head (verified owner)

I was new to the mule world, and was trying to figure out what I needed. I emailed Steve, and he was so very helpful in helping me choose the correct size Britchen for my girl. It arrived really quickly and is as beautiful as Steve said it would be. Great customer service.

  11. Judy Vance (verified owner)

I’ve owned horses for years now and had always wanted a mule. I love mine and knew it was going to be a whole new world regarding equipment. With Steve’s help this gear makes my guy a happy camper. I was unsure about the beta britchen and breast collar, only because I wasn’t familiar with beta. Now I’m a true believer! It’s pliable, easy to adjust and looks good as well. Both the britchen and the breast collar are great products.

  12. Ted (verified owner)

Love the Beta Britchen – I have a large draft mule, The britchen fit him excellent – even when extended to work with the surcingle. Quality craftsmanship and materials – in conjunction with Steve’s YouTube videos I had him fitted and training in the britchen quickly and easily.

  13. Randy Reasoner (verified owner)

I own the beta breechin from Steve and the quality is amazing. I needed one for my 14 hand Molly. She is a little thin and this set adjusted up to fit her great. I have several pieces of Steve’s tack including the Cowboy saddle. This stuff is top notch equine tack. Thank Steve Edwards for providing us with such great equipment for mules and donkeys.

  14. Leah (verified owner)

I have a 13.2hh mule and ordered the small britchen – my only complaint is that there is a lot of excess beta left dangling when it is adjusted small enough to fit her. I guess I need to figure out a way to tie it up somehow. The holes are also spaced pretty far apart, one is too loose and the next is too tight, I need to punch one in the middle somewhere.

  15. Margaret Macy (verified owner)

Really nice britchen, soft material, good fit

  16. Farrah Almeida (verified owner)

This is the first time I’ve used Beta tack and so far it’s been great. Soft and supple conforming easily to my mules shape. Very easy to clean.

  17. Ron Delaney (verified owner)

I purchased the beta britchen to reduce the weight when saddling. It’s much lighter than my leather one. I just returned from a 10 day hunting trip of approximately a 100 miles of riding in very steep terrain. The beta britchen caused zero damage to my mules hide. The mud was easy to remove from the britchen after the trip. I love this britchen!

  18. Trinity Powers (verified owner)

Great product made with great material. Easy to punch extra holes for more adjustment. Worth every dollar.

  19. David OBrien (verified owner)

This is a quality low maintenance product. I look forward to using it for years to come!

  21. Leah Steffens (verified owner)

The only brichen I could find that actually fit my 13 hand molly mule. The material is super durable but also flexible and comfortable. Very high quality.

  22. Ben G. (verified owner)

High quality breaching fits my mule just right.

  23. Gabriella Nelson (verified owner)

I love my beta britchen. I had a leather one from a different guy prior to purchasing the Steve Edwards britchen and wow it’s night and day. steves beta britchen is much lighter and confirms to my mammoth donkey much better. The beta makes it easier to adjust as needed on those long trail rides especially in winter. Versus the leather which gets hard and cold, making it difficult to adjust. I highly recommend this britchen.

  24. Garth Jenson (verified owner)

Works great! I have used these britchens
for years and they are damn tough. Fit is great

  25. Larry Kent (verified owner)

    Luv this britchen!!

  26. Jason (verified owner)

I’ve been using this britchen for over a year and really like it. It still looks almost brand new. My only complaint would be my mules tail hair is constantly getting caught in the buckles and ripped out. I just wrapped the buckles with some tape and that seems to have fixed it. Maybe some different buckles would be nice 🙂

What size britchen should I order?

It doesn’t make a difference. The size is purely for the look of the britchen on the mule or donkey. As a general rule we say Under 15hh, go with the smaller size britchen and 15hh or larger, go with the bigger britchen. It all is a matter of how you want it to appear on your mule. Functionally, both will work the same size.
