Beta Breast Collar

(15 customer reviews)

$161.00

This is a mule breast collar constructed from heavy duty beta designed to fit the slope of a mule’s shoulder. Beta material is stronger, more durable and has a feel and appearance similar to leather. Steve recommends and uses a Beta britchen and breast collar instead of leather for it’s good looks, durability and ease of cleaning!

The breast collar is very important. The breast collar and the breeching, together, help keep your saddle in place. The proper breast collar really means a lot and this Beta Breast Collar is designed to be V-shape that follows the slope of the mule and donkey shoulder. This breast collar is not real wide as most breast collars will be, actually inhibiting the shoulder.

Why Steve Edwards’ Saddles Do Not Have Rings for Breast Collars

You need to notice that on Steve Edwards’ Signature Series Saddles there are no rings to attach the breast collar. There’s a very good reason for that. If you watch your mule or donkey walk, as they walk the shoulder comes forward and it hits the breast collar. Riding on flat ground that saddle is going to be moving forward and eventually it is going to sit right on top of the scapula. Not good. Your breast collar keeps the saddle from going back – it shouldn’t be moving the saddle forward.

Let’s just say you go ahead and use in-skirt rigging and solid rigging for your breast collar. Think about it… every time your breast collar hits the mule shoulder, walking very lateral, the shoulder bumps the breast collar, the breast collar is fixed to the saddle, the saddle moves forward. That’s what you DON’T WANT! And you know what folks, you definitely don’t want to use a pulling collar – that’s the worst kind!

Using A Pommel Strap Breast Collar to Avoid Moving the Saddle Forward

After listening to the mule, learning from the mule, and seeing that the traditional solid-rigging breast collar would move the saddle forward, this breast collar was designed utilizing a pommel strap to secure the breast collar with out fastening and inhibiting movement.

Using a 22″ beta pommel strap, the breast collar can move fluidly left and right as the mule walks. When the mule’s shoulder hits the breast collar, the pommel strap allows the breast collar to move with the shoulder rather than pulling the saddle forward.

More About This Mule Breast Collar

Designed to help keep your saddle in place and you mule comfortable with Neoprene lining, this breast collar has lots of room for adjustment to fit different sized mules; easily add more holes if needed.

Note from Steve: Beta breaching and breast collars are by far the easiest to take care of I personally prefer all Beta products for my personal use in my years of packing experience they are the very toughest and easiest to maintain. Clean with soap and water.

I am using the betta collar , it works perfectly. My saddle does not move with it either. I will buy more of these.

We typically ride 3 to 4 hours take a break then at it again. We used leather but it rub hair off leading to sore spots. Then we tried neoprene, that worked but our horses or mules had trouble reaching low for a drink when the water was shallow and it soon started to crack and deteriorate. We saw these and decided to try one. It fit my wife’s horse perfect and works with the horse. We ordered our second for our mule. We love the prompt response and stay in touch to be sure it fit and that we were happy with his product. Now our Granddaughter wants one. Nice job Steve, you’ll be hearing from us again soon. Thanks, Wilson Clem

I really like the shape and quality of this breast collar. It is big on my 13hh standard donkey however and the sides of it come almost all of the way to the saddle though I was able to work it so he seems totally comfortable in it. With time it seems to be conforming more to his shoulders and I think in the long run it will work really well. I like the beta – soft and pliable, if this was out of harness leather I would not be able to make it fit him. Thanks for such great products.

Goes great with the Trail Lite saddle. Fits our half draft mule great and we have not noticed any excess rubbing. Helps keep the saddle in place.

  5. Sharon Williams (verified owner)

Works great! No rubbing and surprising how strong it is…easy to clean. Love the way you hook to the strap and not the saddle, so innovative Steve!

  6. Ronald Stoddard (verified owner)

Excellent product, The only complaint is the strap should be a little longer. I’m on the last hole. But it works great.

Beta Breast Collar with the pommel strap design is the best thing that I have seen in a mule breast collar ! Allows the mules shoulders to move freely without tugging on the saddle . Excellent design , craftsmanship, and material !

  14. Melanie Rae (verified owner)

I love the beta Breast Collar. It fits the shoulders of the mule perfectly. In fact I use it on my horse since the slop works better. The material is great when it gets wet also as it does not harden like leather.

  15. Leah Steffens (verified owner)

Strong and very durable but still flexible and comfortable for my molly. Amazing quality.
